Semi-Guided Coues Deer Hunts

For your first trip to Mexico, we recommend our semi-guided Coues deer hunts. These hunts still offer you the DIY hunting experience, but come with some added assistance to make sure the experience meets your expectations. Our goal is to keep you safe, help you take a trophy Coues deer buck, and show you the ropes on handling Old Mexico so you can do it yourself on future hunts.

What to Expect on a Semi-Guided Coues Deer Hunt

Length of Hunt

Our semi-guided coues deer hunts are 6 full days of hunting with a travel day on each side to get to and from Arizona.

Border Crossing Help & Ranch Familiarizing

We will typically meet our clients in Arizona and caravan down to Mexico together - helping you get through the border and find the ranch with no hassles. Once we arrive at the ranch, your guide will explain the ranch boundaries, hunting strategy, and help you find your overall footing before the hunt starts.

Guide Assistance Throughout the Hunt

Your guide will help with glassing, transportation, and general direction, but being a semi-guided hunt means you will still be self-sufficient for the hunt itself. Your guide is there to assist, teach, advise, and mentor you to be successful at Coues deer hunting on your own. We like to say that you are the driver, and he is in the passenger seat - just there to help when needed.

Great Learning Experience for First-Timers

They offer you the opportunity to learn an amazing set of tangible and intangible skills that will allow you to take on a DIY Coues deer hunt in the future if that is your goal, or apply a new set of knowledge to your hunts back home.

Pre-Scouted Ranches

Even when you have some experience under your belt, Mexico is always an adventure. That said, we bridge the gap between full DIY and semi-guided by still cutting out the work of finding hunting areas. With our network of ranch leases in Sonora, you will have access to some amazing Coues deer hunting country. We will make sure you have all of the information you need before the hunt, and offer as much intel as we can from prior knowledge and trail cam photos, but once you get to the ranch, it is up to you to seal the deal on a Coues deer buck.

Flexibility: Season-Long Access

The most amazing thing about our DIY hunts is the flexibility. You can make your trip as long as you want, and if you don’t fill your tag, you can come back. In most cases, if your group buys our tags for a ranch, it is yours for the season, and multiple trips can be arranged if that is something you are interested in or need. Of course, this may not apply to late-season hunts.

Best of Both Worlds

Our DIY Coues deer hunts in Mexico are the ultimate cross between a regular lease and a guided hunt - offering you a ton of flexibility, yet still with a helping hand. Get in touch with us to learn more about our self-guided hunts and how to start planning your Coues deer hunt in Sonora, Mexico.

Coues Deer Hunting in Sonora, Mexico: What You Need to Know

Coues Deer Hunting Season

The best time to hunt coues deer is during the rut, when mature bucks are most active during daylight hours. The coues deer rut in Mexico takes place during January, with the pre-rut beginning in December. We offer limited pre-rut hunts in December but conduct the majority of our hunts in January during peak rut activity.

Coues Deer Hunting Methods

Blind Hunting

On our desert ranches, we hunt coues deer from ground blinds over water sources. This is the preferred hunting method for archery hunters, as we have very high success rates hunting this way. A typical day of hunting from a ground blind over water usually means sitting from daylight to dark. The big bucks get thirsty from chasing does and prefer to come to water during the middle of the day. Seeing anywhere from 5-15 deer per day is pretty normal, and all of our setups are at locations where shooter bucks have been located with trail camera photos.

Mountain Hunting

On our mountain ranches, hunting methods consist mostly of glassing and spot-and-stalk, which is better suited for rifle hunting. This style of hunting typically means spending all day afield hiking and glassing from various high points using binoculars to find rutting bucks. Hunters can often see anywhere from 15 to 50 deer per day, depending on hunting ability and conditions. Once a shooter buck is spotted, the hunter will have to navigate their way into shooting range.

Most of our hunters will agree that sitting in a blind is a mental game and that our spot-and-stalk hunts in the mountains are much more physical. Either way, both methods are exciting in their own right!

Preparing for a Coues Deer Hunt in Mexico

Weather & Gear

On our desert ranches, the weather is typically 75-80 degrees during the day and dry. The mountains tend to be much cooler, with daytime temps in the 40's to low 60's with a decent chance of some rain. For either ranch type, pack like you would for any western mountain hunt. Remember that Mexico does not have all the same resources as here in the U.S., so be sure to always have a backup plan in the event of the unknown.

Hunting Licenses & Travel

MADD Hunts will provide the hunters with their tags and all paperwork for their DIY or Semi-Guided coues deer hunt. All hunters will need a current U.S. Passport, so be sure to have this in order well beforehand. Other important documents can be found on our documents page, and your MADD Hunts rep will walk you through these before your hunt.
